Patios, walls and steps, laid by hand.

Ledge & Till is a small stone and hardscape crew. We dig, set and lay every job ourselves, from the first cut to the last joint.

Patios, retaining walls, steps, outdoor kitchens and fire pits.

Dig to done

  1. A back yard dug out down to bare subsoil, old slabs stacked by the house

    Dig

We take the ground down to firm subsoil and haul it away, so nothing settles later.

  2. A plate compactor on crushed stone in front of a dug bank

    Base

Crushed stone goes in thin layers, each one compacted flat. The base is the job.

  3. Hexagon paving stones being laid along a path, tools alongside

    Lay

Every stone is set by hand on a screeded bed and checked for level and fall.

  4. A finished stone terrace and pool at dusk

    Live

Joints filled, edges locked, site swept. Then it's yours, through every winter.

Before and after

Drag the handle across. A dug-out yard on one side, the finished terrace on the other: the clearest proof a stone crew can show.

Demo pair: two different licensed photos stand in here. On a client site it is one job, shot from the same spot on the first and last day.

What we lay

A stone terrace beside a lawn and pool at dusk

Patios and terraces

A patio is mostly what you never see: the dig and the base. We set every stone on a compacted bed with a slight fall away from the house, so water leaves and the stone stays put.

Retaining walls

A wall that holds back a slope has to drain. We build on a footing below frost with gravel behind, so the face doesn't lean after the first hard winter.

Steps and landings

Even risers, generous treads and a landing where you'd want to stop. Steps are where people notice a careless job, so we take our time on them.

An outdoor kitchen under string lights

Outdoor kitchens

Stone and block bases built around the grill you choose, counters at a comfortable height, and room for the gas or power line to come in cleanly.

A built-in fire pit lit on a stone terrace

Fire pits

A lined fire ring set a safe distance from the house, with a seat wall at sitting height, so the patio becomes a room after dark.

Wall repair and repointing

Fieldstone walls slump and mortar cracks. We take down the loose section, rebuild it on a sound base and repoint it to match what's already there.

How a job runs

One crew from the first visit to the last walk-round. Monday to Friday, 7 to 5.

A visit first
We walk the site with you, measure, and look hard at drainage and access.
A drawing and a written price
A plan with the stone named, and a price that doesn't move once we start.
Dig day to last day
The same crew throughout. Site tidied each evening, and you hear what happens next.
The last walk
We walk it with you, fix anything you point at, and leave care notes for the stone.

Sample reviews

Written for this concept. A real site shows the owner's own Google reviews.

Five weeks on, the terrace still looks like the evening they swept it.

Sample review, homeowner, pool terrace

They spent the first morning on drainage. I understood why at the spring thaw, when next door's yard flooded and ours didn't.

Sample review, homeowner, retaining wall

A written price, on time, and a crew that cleaned up every evening. Visitors notice the new steps first.
